Auction Sheet
Guide
Learn how to read Japanese auction sheets before placing a bid.
Reliability Notice
Auction sheets are inspection reports prepared for auction use. They are very helpful, but they should not be treated as a full mechanical guarantee. Always cross-check photos, inspector comments, mileage, and visible condition before making a final decision.
Sample Auction Sheets
Auction sheet formats differ by auction house, but most include vehicle details, grade, inspector comments, and a body diagram.
What to Check First
01. Auction Grade
The overall grade gives a quick condition guide, but it should never be checked alone.
02. Mileage
Check the odometer reading and any notes about replacement meters or unclear history.
03. Inspector Comments
Important notes may include engine noise, warning lights, transmission issues, corrosion, or missing items.
04. Repair History
Grades such as R or RA usually indicate repaired or accident-history vehicles.
05. Body Diagram
The diagram shows scratches, dents, replaced panels, rust, and repair marks on the body.
06. Destination Rules
Even a good vehicle may not be suitable for every country. Always check local import and compliance rules.
Condition Grading Scale
The exact meaning can vary slightly by auction house, but this is a practical guide for overseas buyers.
| Grade | General meaning | Typical buyer note |
|---|---|---|
| S / 6 | Nearly new or very high condition. | Usually premium price. |
| 5 | Excellent condition with very minor marks. | Good for retail-quality stock. |
| 4.5 | High quality used vehicle with small wear. | Often a strong balance of quality and price. |
| 4 | Good used condition with normal age-related marks. | Common target grade for many buyers. |
| 3.5 | Fair condition with visible scratches, dents, or wear. | Needs careful photo and comment check. |
| R / RA | Repaired or accident-history vehicle. | Only consider after careful review. |
| 0 / ** | Not rated, major issue, or special case. | High risk. Confirm details before any bid. |
Common Damage Symbols
Numbers usually show severity. For example, A1 is usually lighter than A3.
| Symbol | Meaning | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| A1 / A2 / A3 | Scratch | A1 is light. A3 may need paintwork. |
| U1 / U2 / U3 | Dent | U3 is more noticeable and may affect resale. |
| W1 / W2 / W3 | Repair trace | W3 can mean visible or poor-quality repair. |
| S1 / S2 | Rust | Check underbody, wheel arches, and coastal-use signs. |
| C1 / C2 | Corrosion | More serious than surface rust. Review carefully. |
| XX | Panel replaced | Confirm which panel and why it was replaced. |
